PRAYER AND SELF-KNOWLEDGE
Prayer & self-knowledge was the main ascetical practice of the monastics of old. In our own time it has become a treasure-trove for psychological research. For the monastics, the ways of religion and psychology were not yet distinct. The purely religious way was at the same time the psychological way. The religious way incorporated many of the psychological insights and methods which today's science, so keen and being independent, would as its own. A book on this subject will help us discover that prayer is the source of self-knowledge and a remedy for the wounds which today we seek to heal by some form or other of psychotherapy. With self-knowledge and by healing in prayer, we can bring ourselves to reality as the image of God - or better yet, God can bring this image to reality in us.

QUEST FOR THE LIVING GOD (P)
'Since the middle of the twentieth century, ' writes Elizabeth Johnson, 'there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. On different continents, under pressure from historical events and social conditions, people of faith have glimpsed the living God in fresh ways. It is not that a wholly different God is discovered from the One believed in by previous generations. Christian faith does not believe in a new God but, finding itself in new situations, seeks the presence of God there. Aspects long-forgotten are brought into new relationships with current events, and the depths of divine compassion are appreciated in ways not previously imagined.'
This book sets out the fruit of these discoveries. The first chapter describes Johnson's point of departure and the rules of engagement, with each succeeding chapter distilling a discrete idea of God. Featured are transcendental, political, liberation, feminist, black, Hispanic, interreligious, and ecological theologies, ending with the particular Christian idea of the one God as Trinity.'Since the middle of the twentieth century, ' writes Elizabeth Johnson, 'there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. READING GOD
In the "Translator's Foreward" to this excellent little book, Abbot Gregory notes that the recent centuries have overlooked or misunderstood the meaning of "lectio divina" but that in our time this deficiency is being overcome. This is of great moment! The movement once again recognizes the centrality of Scripture not only in the liturgy but as the basic source of the Christian's personal and private prayer. The Bible is the prayer book.

RECOVERING BENEDICT:
Recovering Benedict encourages us to nourish our physical and spiritual lives using the Rule of Benedict and the twelve-step recovery principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.
As the "father of Western monasticism," Benedict pulled together various strands of monastic spirituality into a single handbook for holiness. Alcoholics Anonymous presented an equally innovative way to address alcoholism based on twelve steps drawn from numerous spiritual sources. While it took a sixth-century Italian collating various sources to produce a handbook for spiritual life, it likewise took a twentieth-century American to pull together the spiritual principles to recover one's physical life. John E. Crean, Jr. brings both traditions together in one handbook for living: daily meditations are inspired by the down-to-earth wisdom of the Rule of Benedict, and AA's template for sobriety and humbleness.
A thoughtful daily devotional for all who wish for deeper healing, for personal use, or group study.
