CATHOLICISM: A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE FAITH (P)

CATHOLICISM: A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE FAITH (P)
$16.00
"Catholicism takes a path less traveled in leading us to explore the faith through stories, biographies, and images."--Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York

What is Catholicism? A 2,000-year-old living tradition? A worldview? A way of life? A relationship? A mystery? In Catholicism Father Robert Barron examines all these questions and more, seeking to capture the body, heart and mind of the Catholic faith.

Starting from the essential foundation of Jesus Christ's incarnation, life, and teaching, Father Barron moves through the defining elements of Catholicism--from sacraments, worship, and prayer, to Mary, the Apostles, and Saints, to grace, salvation, heaven, and hell. Whether discussing Scripture or the rose window at Notre Dame, he uses his distinct and dynamic grasp of art, literature, architecture, personal stories, theology, philosophy, and history to present the Church to the world.

Paired with his documentary film series of the same title, Catholicism is an intimate journey, capturing "The Catholic Thing" in all its depth and beauty. Eclectic, unique, and inspiring, Father Barron brings the faith to life for a new generation, in a style that is both faithful to timeless truths, while simultaneously speaking in the language of contemporary life.

CELIBACY-A FULLNESS OF LIFE
$5.95

The author addresses a topic which is not only pertinent to priests or religious, but also, applies to all Christians.  He sees celibacy, next to poverty and obedience, as one of the three steps of acceptance, letting go and admittance in order to attain full human potential.  He shows how great the importance of celibacy was to the early monastics in order to attain this potential.  The author also shows how God in this fulfilled celibacy can fill a person's most profound yearnings.

CHALLENGE OF MIDLIFE

CHALLENGE OF MIDLIFE
$4.50

The so-called Midlife Crisis not only presents us with a variety of problems, but also, gives us an opportunity to grow spiritually and advance to the authentic faith.  This volume addresses the mastery of midlife crisis in faith from two sides: from the point of view of the psychologist C.G. Jung, and the other, from the viewpoint of the mystic Johannes Tauler, for whom midlife can be a way to penetrate to the depth of one's soul.

CHALLENGE OF SILENCE

CHALLENGE OF SILENCE
$4.50

Monastic tradition does not look upon silence as a withdrawal, but as a means of an honest confrontation with thoughts, desires, and needs that constantly "talk" within us.  Monastics of old point out ways to achieve interior silence, freedom from self and a prayer life by which they allow themselves to be totally permeated by God, free from all thoughts and fantasies.

CHARLES OF THE DESERT: A LIFE IN VERSE

CHARLES OF THE DESERT: A LIFE IN VERSE
$20.00
Featured in "The Millions" -- A year in Reading, Nick Ripatrazone.

"Each year I read more books than I can possibly review -- here are 5 of the finest and most memorable of that bunch. They are worth your money, your time, and your attention.
A book of poems that fictionalizes the life of Trappist monk Charles de Foucauld. Beautiful verse, full of pieces like "The Pangs of Wanting: " "I deliver my body to the church, / though I cannot imagine what penance might relieve / these pangs of wanting." Later: "I take first communion...My tongue licks up the bread: a whisper / of paper on my teeth...His torn body in my stomach, / his blood in my spit, I almost vomit; I almost sing." More collections about God like this one would be very welcomed."--Nick Ripatrazone, The Millions

Charles of the Desert is a novel-in-verse accompanying Charles de Foucauld, hermit and writer of "The Prayer of Abandonment," as he explores and adapts desert spirituality, monasticism, and contemplative prayer. Charles is an unusual and compelling figure and Charles of the Desert is unusual and compelling as well -- different from nonfiction books which focus on instructing in or explaining these subjects. It also explores Charles' profound respect for Muslims, his pioneering efforts at interfaith dialogue, and his commitment to live among Muslims as a "universal brother" known for his compassion and solidarity.

Born in 1858 to a family of French aristocrats, Charles was torn between his ambition to do great things and his desire for the hidden life, between public service and private prayer. Charles of the Desert uses elements of fiction and poetry to follow him to Morocco, Syria, Israel, and Algeria, as he becomes a cavalry officer, explorer, geographer, pilgrim, Trappist monk, priest, abolitionist, translator, folklorist, hermit, fort-builder, and martyr. Throughout these travels and transformations, Charles searched for a vocation that would reflect his convictions and his experience of God. In his last fifteen years, he settled in a remote part of the Sahara, and focused on self-denial, contemplation, and charity. He claimed the nomadic Tuareg as his brothers, the desert as his earthly home.

COME & SEE: HOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH LEAD US TO JESUS CHRIST

COME & SEE: HOW THE TEACHINGS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH LEAD US TO JESUS CHRIST
$14.95
Jesus Christ is the most influential man who ever lived. But do you really know Him? Many will answer "Yes" to this question. Yet, given the various conflicting opinions today about Jesus and His teachings, it is clear that many people have incomplete or false perception about Him. It is the premise of Come and See that the Catholic Church holds the key to discovering the truth about Him. This book demonstrates the Christ-centeredness of the Church's teachings, the way in which those teachings bring us closer to Jesus. When the disciples ask where the Lord is staying, He replies simply, "Come and See" (John 1:39). This book extends the same invitation to all who wish to draw closer to Him and feel called to seriously investigate the teachings of Catholicism. Offering a thorough exposition of the Church's main teachings, this book will help the reader go beyond merely knowing what the Church teaches to understanding why she teaches it, and how her doctrines really do bring us closer to Jesus.

COMPASSION: A REFLECTION ON THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

COMPASSION: A REFLECTION ON THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
$10.95
New/Used: New

In this provocative essay on that least understood virtue, compassion, the authors challenge themselves and us with these questions: Where do we place compassion in our lives? Is it enough to live a life in which we hurt one another as little as possible? Is our guiding ideal a life of maximum pleasure and minimum pain? Compassion answers no.

After years of study and discussion among themselves, with other religious, and with men and women at the very center of national politics, the authors look at compassion with a vigorous new perspective. They place compassion at the heart of a Christian life in a world governed far too long by principles of power and destructive control. Compassion, no longer merely an eraser of human mistakes, is a force of prayer and action -- the expression of God's love for us and our love for God and one another.

Compassion is a book that says no to a compassion of guilt and failure and yes to a compassionate love that pervades our spirit and moves us to action. Henri Nouwen, Donald McNeill, and Douglas Morrison have written a moving document on what it means to be a Christian in a difficult time.

COMPLETE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING

COMPLETE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING
$22.99
The Christian mystical tradition has its roots in Holy Scripture but was enunciated most clearly by the late 5th century author writing under the name Dionysius the Areopagite. It was acquaintance with the medieval version of that work which inspired the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing and led him to develop his insights and perceptions of the obscurity and “unknowability” of God. His understanding was that God was on an entirely different plane of existence from human beings—indeed, so different that time-bound human language was inadequate to describe God exhaustively or accurately. Intellect and emotion both fail in seeking God, who can only be encountered by rejecting of all common earthly means in a “cloud of forgetting” and the discovery of Godself in the dark “cloud of unknowing” which can be pierced only with a “lance of longing love.”

Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

The first autobiography ever written, and one of the most profound testaments of faith, ever.

CONFESSOR'S HANDBOOK (P)

CONFESSOR'S HANDBOOK (P)
$16.95
New/Used: New
Many today suggest that the sacrament of reconciliation is in crisis. The number of practicing Catholics who seek out the sacrament has, according to many studies, greatly diminished in recent years. No one is suggesting that the need for forgiveness and reconciliation has diminished. Bishops, priests, and other pastoral ministers are often frustrated in their efforts to invite Catholics to the sacrament. Confessors are often left wondering about their role in the crisis. Father Kurt Stasiak offers a major contribution to the dilemma with this very practical, contemporary, and realistic guide, now revised and expanded, for those who "hear confessions." Written with the perspective of modern sacramental theology and the best insights of pastoral care today, this book will help confessors to revive their own interest and commitment to the sacrament. This book has received an imprimatur from Most Reverend Daniel M. Buechlin, OSB, archbishop of Indianapolis. Priests, whether newly ordained or veterans, seminarians, and professors in seminary who teach courses on the sacrament of reconciliation, will find this to be an indispensable help in their work.
